futonthe bedding you lay out and put away
Essential
Japanese futon bedding laid on tatami with folded bedding nearby.

A futon is a thin mattress laid directly on tatami at night and folded away in the morning.

A Japanese futon is a set: a thin mattress laid on the floor and a quilt on top. You take it out of a cupboard at night and put it away in the morning, which turns the bedroom back into a living room. This is not the sofa bed sold as a futon overseas. Households air the mattress in the sun regularly to keep the damp out.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

A futon in Japan is not what the word means abroad. It is not a sofa bed. It is a set of bedding: a firm, fairly thin mattress that you lay directly on the tatami, and a quilt that goes on top. At night you take it out of a built-in cupboard, lay it out, and sleep on the floor.

In the morning you fold it and put it back, and the room becomes an ordinary room again. That is the real point of the system: in a small house, a room does not have to be a bedroom all day. There is a maintenance routine too.

Because you sleep close to the floor, damp is the enemy, so on a sunny day you hang the mattress over a balcony rail to air it, and beating it with a paddle used to be a standard sound of a Japanese afternoon. A freshly aired futon smells of sun, and it is one of the small pleasures of living here.

布団ふとんfutonthe bedding you lay out and put away

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIsn't sleeping on the floor uncomfortable?

AIt takes a few nights. The mattress is firmer than a bed, and many people find it better for their back. Tatami gives more than a hard floor would, and you would not lay a futon on concrete.

QWhy put it away every day?

AFor space and for air. A room used for sleeping becomes a room for everything else, and lifting the mattress off the floor lets the moisture underneath dry out.

QDo people still use them?

AMany do, but beds are now more common in cities, especially among younger people and in apartments with wooden floors. Many households still keep a futon set for guests.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHA futon is a wooden-framed sofa that folds into a bed.

FACTThat is a Western product that borrowed the name. A Japanese futon has no frame at all; it is bedding that goes on the floor and into a cupboard.

Phrases you can use

  • I'll lay out a futon for you.
  • We put it away in the cupboard in the morning.
  • It's not the sofa bed kind.
  • We hang it out to air on sunny days.
  • A freshly aired futon smells of sunshine.

Background
