Eboshi is a tall black cap that adult men wore in old Japan and Shinto priests still wear.
Eboshi is a black cap that adult men in Japan once wore in daily life. From the Heian period through the Middle Ages, men wore it at home and outside, while a more formal cap called kanmuri was kept for court ceremonies. Today you mostly see eboshi on Shinto priests, sumo referees and actors in historical dramas.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
When you visit a shrine or watch sumo, you may notice a tall black cap. That's called an eboshi. It looks like part of a costume today, but for hundreds of years, it was simply what grown men wore. From the Heian period into the Middle Ages, men wore eboshi in everyday life.
For formal court events, they wore a stiffer cap called a kanmuri, but the eboshi was the normal one. Putting on a cap was even part of the coming-of-age ceremony for boys. The man who placed the cap on a boy's head was called his eboshi-oya, or cap father, and he was expected to look after the young man for life.
It's also said that showing your bare head in public was considered embarrassing. In later centuries, men gradually stopped wearing it in daily life. Now it lives on with Shinto priests, sumo referees and festival parades like Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto.

As a short speech

Background
