denden daikothe pellet drum you shake to quiet a baby
Advanced
A small red pellet drum with two corded beads and a wooden handle.

Denden daiko, or a pellet drum, is a two-headed drum on a handle, struck by stringed beads when twisted.

A denden daiko is a drum head on each side of a shallow body, mounted on a stick, with two beads hanging on short cords. Rolling the handle between your palms swings the beads so they strike alternately. It is a baby's toy, given at birth celebrations, and it was also treated as a charm — the sound was thought to drive off bad things. Similar pellet drums exist across Asia.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

A denden daiko is the simplest instrument most Japanese people have held. It is a small drum with a skin on each face, fixed to a handle, and two beads hanging from short cords at the sides. You do not hit it. You hold the handle between your palms and roll it back and forth, and the beads swing out and strike each head in turn, which produces the rattling sound the name imitates.

Babies find this fascinating. It has two jobs. The obvious one is as a toy, and it is still a standard gift at a birth or a first festival for a child. The less obvious one is protective: like bells at a shrine and the clappers of a night watchman, the sound was understood to drive off what should not be near a small child, so it was given as much as a charm as a plaything.

The form is not uniquely Japanese: the same design appears in China, Korea, India and Tibet, in ritual as well as play. The Japanese version is small, brightly painted, and firmly a thing for infants.

でんでん太鼓でんでんだいこdenden daikothe pellet drum you shake to quiet a baby

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QHow do you play it?

AYou roll the handle between your palms rather than striking it. The beads swing outward and hit each drum head in turn, so the rhythm comes from your wrists.

QIs it only a toy?

AMostly, but it was also a charm. The sound was thought to keep bad things away from a small child, which is why it is a birth and first-festival gift.

QWhere can I buy one?

ATemple and shrine approach shops, traditional toy shops, and craft sections of department stores. Painted wooden ones are inexpensive and travel well.

Background
