Araiba is the washing area at a Japanese bath, where you scrub yourself clean before soaking.

Araiba is the washing area at a public bath, an onsen or even a Japanese home bathroom. You sit on a low stool in front of a faucet and a hand shower, wash your body and hair, and rinse off all the soap. Only then do you get into the bath. The tub is for soaking, not for washing, so everyone can share clean water.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

One thing that surprises visitors at a Japanese bath is that you don't wash in the tub. Instead, there's a separate washing area called the araiba. It's a row of faucets and hand showers along the wall, each with a low stool, a plastic bowl, and often shampoo and body soap.

You sit down, wash your hair and body, and rinse off completely before you go anywhere near the hot water. Sitting matters. If you stand and shower, the water splashes onto the people next to you. A few other habits help, too.

Don't leave the shower running, rinse the stool and bowl when you're done, and don't leave your things at a spot to save it for later. At home it's the same idea, which is why Japanese bathrooms have a floor next to the tub that's meant to get wet. To me, this is the key to understanding Japanese baths: you wash outside the tub, so the tub can be shared.

洗い場あらいばaraibathe washing area at a Japanese bath

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy can't I just shower standing up?

AIn most bathhouses the showers are set low and close together, so standing would spray the people beside you. Sitting on the stool keeps the water where it belongs.

QDo I have to wash my hair, too?

AYou don't have to, but you should at least wash your body and rinse well. If you have long hair, tie it up so it doesn't touch the bathwater.

QWhat is the "karan" written on the faucet?

AKaran is what Japanese bathhouses call the faucet. The word is said to come from the Dutch word kraan, which means tap. The other button usually says shower.

Phrases you can use

  • Please wash here first, then get in the bath.
  • Sit on the stool so you don't splash anyone.
  • Rinse off all the soap before you get in.
  • When you're done, rinse the stool and put it back.
  • Please don't leave your things there to save the spot.

Background
