Amabie is a mermaid-like yokai that is said to have predicted an epidemic in 1846.

Amabie is a yokai, or supernatural creature, from a woodblock news sheet printed in 1846. It reportedly rose out of the sea in Higo, now Kumamoto, with long hair, a beak, scales and three legs. It said that if disease spread, people should show others a picture of it. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people all over Japan started drawing it as a wish for good health.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Amabie is a yokai, or Japanese supernatural creature, that became famous almost overnight in 2020. Its story comes from a woodblock news sheet printed in 1846, which is now kept at Kyoto University's library. According to the sheet, something glowed in the sea off Higo, now Kumamoto Prefecture, night after night.

When an official went to look, a strange creature appeared. It had long hair, a mouth like a beak, a scaly body and three legs. It called itself Amabie and said that good harvests would continue for six years, but that disease would also spread. It told people to copy its picture and show it to others.

Until 2020, few people besides yokai fans knew this story. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, artists began posting drawings of Amabie online, and even Japan's health ministry used one in a public awareness icon. I like Amabie because it shows how an old folk image can give people a little comfort in hard times.

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs Amabie an old, famous legend in Japan?

ANot really. The main source is one news sheet from 1846, and before 2020 mostly yokai fans knew the name. It became widely known only during the COVID-19 pandemic.

QDoes drawing Amabie cure illness?

ANo one treats it as medicine. People draw it the way they might buy a good-luck charm, as a wish for health. The original sheet only says to show its picture to people.

QWhy does it look like a mermaid?

AIt came out of the sea, so it has scales and a fish-like body. But it also has a beak and three legs, so it is not quite a mermaid. Some researchers think the name may be a copying error for a similar creature called Amabiko.

Background
